A prototype and concept for retrofitted and cost-effective facade greening, which can be implemented without complex integration into the facade.

As a combination of a sliding shutter and a vertical planting system Green Shade connects the benefits of greening the facade to reduce temperature rises in cities with the personal advantage for residents, who can use the module to shadow their windows and plant fruit or vegetables.

Greening the cities

Summers in Europe are becoming more extreme every year and large built-up cities in particular are heating up due to surfaces sealed with concrete. One of the countermeasures against climate change and rising temperatures is the greening of our cities. By greening facades, plants not only cool city streets, but also insulate the interior of the building while making use of vertical space that is often neglected in cities.

Especially in new construction projects, greening is increasingly being included in the planning from the very beginning. Systems for subsequent greening are still rare, as compatibility with different types of facades is complex and difficult to realise. This is where Green Shade comes into play in using windows as a common ground to implement modular facade greening.
