Paroxysm: Exploring Water and Identity

Mixed Media Installation: Perfect Nose — © Jingjing Wang

Paroxysm, an innovative project by an interdisciplinary team, explores water's dimensions and cultural beauty standards. Through a blend of cartographic imagery, sound design, and mixed media, Paroxysm challenges societal ideals and invites personal transformation.

Integrating Water's Dimensions with Cultural Exploration

Paroxysm is a pioneering project that synthesizes the academic exploration of water's multifaceted dimensions with an in-depth examination of cultural beauty standards. By leveraging advanced cartographic imagery, the project meticulously investigates the morphology and fluid dynamics of water, revealing its profound cultural significance and indispensable role in shaping both the physical landscapes and societal structures of the Netherlands. This research transcends traditional academic boundaries, delving into the complex world of hydroculture to highlight the crucial impact water has on our environment. The project seeks to illuminate how water not only influences natural landscapes but also plays a pivotal role in the cultural and societal development of regions deeply intertwined with its presence.

Reimagining Beauty Through Experimental Media

Paroxysm also critically engages with conventional notions of music and beauty through its experimental mixed media publishing program. Central to this initiative is a distinctive album featuring three subliminally inspired tracks, which employ specific audio frequencies to subtly affect the listener’s subconscious mind. These frequencies are crafted to alter self-perception, particularly concerning features such as nose shape. This innovative auditory experience confronts the rigid and often unrealistic beauty standards imposed by society, addressing the anxieties and pressures they create. By prompting listeners to question and reassess these societal ideals, Paroxysm encourages a transformative redefinition of personal identity, challenging entrenched norms and fostering a more fluid and self-affirming perspective.

A Comprehensive Multi-Dimensional Experience

The project’s innovative approach extends through a variety of media, including digital video, installations, publications, sound design, and website design, offering a comprehensive and multi-dimensional experience. Paroxysm intricately connects the fluid dynamics of water with the fluidity of human identity, weaving a narrative of resilience and personal transformation. Each element within the project tells a compelling story, highlighting the interconnectedness between individuals, their environment, and their self-perception. Through this holistic and integrative approach, Paroxysm promotes a deeper understanding of the symbiotic relationship between water, culture, and personal identity, fostering both scientific inquiry and cultural reflection. The project not only enriches our comprehension of water's role in shaping our world but also inspires a more nuanced and reflective view of self and identity.
