(Archive) Circularity: The future of wind turbines

This project was part of DDW 2024
Installation of wind turbines

At Dutch Design Week, Vattenfall hosts a joint exhibition by four design studios. Discover their approach and creative solutions for repurposing wind turbine components and their vision for a circular future.

What if Lab

In 2023, we started with the question: "What if.... decommissioning a wind farm could be a gold mine of resources?" Or more simply, what happens to wind turbines once they reach the end of their operational lifespan? Recycling is a step in the right direction, but at Vattenfall, we believe there’s more potential in these decommissioned parts. This was our starting point. Collaborating with designers, we’re exploring new scenarios where wind farms leave a smaller material footprint.

Collaboration with design studios

In the exhibition, four leading design studio Superuse Studios & Blade–made, Studio Carbon, cepezed, and Interactivist present their unique solutions for the circularity of wind turbines. They tackle various challenges such as decommissioning, recycling, and repurposing materials, showcasing creative designs that highlight the future of sustainable wind energy.
