In her Master’s project, Sara Boumkwo explores the relationship between Black women and Western beauty standards.

In her Master's research, Sara investigates the relationship between Black women and Western beauty standards. Inspired by her experiences growing up as a mixed-race child of European and African descent in a predominantly white environment, she felt a lack of representation and visibility. From an early age, mainstream media—such as Disney and Mattel—inundated us with messages about gender, femininity, and beauty ideals. Drawing from childhood memories, Sara reenacts old photos of herself dressed as a princess. Through this process, she engages in a dialogue with her younger self, questioning the internalized male gaze and confronting the Western beauty standards she once tightly embraced.
