Spaces for silence

Openbare Stilteruimtes - Heide — © Aline Gerards & Hedwich Hooghiemstra

At a time when 1.3 million working people in the Netherlands experience burnout symptoms, the importance of moments of silence and reflection is becoming increasingly clear. Yet, many find it challenging to carve out such moments without a dedicated physical space.

Design approach

Gerards and Hooghiemstra conduct site-specific field research to design suitable spaces for various contexts, such as hospitals, parks and offices. The aim of this project is to promote contemplation in a busy society by creating accessible silence rooms for everyone.

How do we make space for initiatives that promote our public health? In a world where everything has to be proven and measurable, this spatial exploration offers a concept that everyone can sense and experience. Take a break and escape from the hustle and bustle during Dutch Design Week, and experience silence in a public setting.

About Aline Gerards

Gerards is a designer who explores personal experience and emotional well-being, helping people reconnect with each other. Hooghiemstra translates these perspectives into spaces so people can process experiences without words. Together, they design spaces that encourage contemplation.
