INTERFERENCES, WONDERS OF LIGHT-ART

When two waves meet each other, interesting patterns will arise.

Nature and its magnificent colors and patterns are a never-ending source of inspiration for visual artist Deborah Apol. The series Interferences was inspired by what we call wave phenomena in physics.
When a stone is thrown into still water, a circular wave pattern is moving radially outwards.
Interesting patterns can arise where two waves meet. They can strengthen or extinguish each other.
This physical phenomenon is called Interference. Also sound and light behave in the same manner.

Combining Apol's fascination for fluorescent acrylics and light, the idea of transforming wave patterns into light objects was born.
In the colorful series 'Interferences' several layers of laser engraved fluorescent acrylics are placed in front of each other. Each individual circle has a different circular wave pattern, starting from the center
of the circle.
This results in captivating patterns that come alive under the glow of black light.
Each handmade object has its own aura because of the carefully chosen colors of the layers. The magic happens when the light changes during the day and black light is supplied to it.

The Creative Process

It's the material of the transparent colored and fluorescent acrylic glass that takes an important role in Deborah's work.
Playing and experimenting with transparent colored sheets and forms inspires her to make objects which can surprise and create the will to interact.
The constant surprising changes and effects of light on the colors of the layered acrylics is what Deborah drives to create.
The material illuminates when light energy is supplied to it, whether in the form of natural daylight or artificial light.
To bring all the attention to the beauty of the material Deborah works in clear abstract forms.

Craftmanship

All objects are unique and made by Deborah Apol herself, using mainly recycled materials. Her most important applied technology is laser engraving and laser cutting.
Because of her musical background (as a professional pianist), Deborah uses the musical terminology 'opus', which means 'work', for numbering each individual light artwork.

Each light object displayed during DDW 2024 is for sale, numbered, and signed by Deborah Apol.
