AT THE END - The Urn as a Singular Object

Urn

The urn is the last form in which the characteristics, passions and life of the deceased are projected. The work pursues the goal of a contemporary interpretation of the archetypal vessel. The manual production and the archaic firing process of smoke firing create unique pieces.

The Urn as a Singular Object

The current way of dealing with death, mourning and burial is shaped by the social transformation that is expressed in the burial culture through pluralism and individuality and is at the same time changing. The answer in a highly industrialized and digital society is to see the urn as a singular object in order to do justice to the need for individuality in the process. The urn is the final form in which the characteristics, passions and life of the deceased are projected. The work pursues the goal of a contemporary interpretation of the archetypal vessel. The processing of the raw material clay and its firing in an open fire has always been a constant companion of humanity, our history and development. The manual production and the archaic firing process of smoke firing create unique pieces that cannot be reproduced. The traces of fire and smoke leave behind unpredictable and random surface designs.

About Florian Albrecht

I live in Potsdam and am currently setting up my ceramics studio. In my work I focus on the analogue and handcrafted approach. The objects should fit the needs and the existing; it is important to me to find a timeless, reduced and clear formal language and to interpret it in a contemporary way.
