Futures Garden – Blooming Seeds

Policy creation powered by speculative design, radical empathy, and analytical insight

Futures Garden is a project by the EU Policy Lab of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in collaboration with DG RTD. The EU Policy Lab is the EU’s collaborative and experiential space for innovative policymaking. They host the disciplines foresight, design and behavioral insights.

During this panel talk, we will present and discuss two of our blooming seeds: speculative future artefacts produced by design studios N O R M A L S and Modem.

Modem is an office for design and innovation dedicated to envisioning how forward-thinking companies and institutions can thrive amidst exponential change. Modem approaches this mission as a think tank, collaborating with academic partners like Harvard GSD and MIT, and as a design studio, working with clients such as OpenAI and Google.

N O R M A L S is a Berlin-based speculative design studio supporting organisations in reflecting on and preparing for possible futures. They work with clients such as the German Ministry for Research and Education, the Potsdam Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, cultural institutes, and companies like IKEA.

Join us in the Futures Garden

We would like to invite you to join the discussion and co-create the future with us. We will watch the speculative artifacts together and then jointly discuss, with a panel, how these futures are perceived. At the end we will shortly explain how these insights are taken up for more future oriented policy-making.
