Willem's Ceramics Atelier explores the boundaries of ceramics. During this journey, various products emerged, presented alongside Transformed Remnants, a project that recycles discarded books into new plate material. Willem’s diverse approach is showcased through this work.

Willem's Ceramics Atelier

Willem’s Ceramics Atelier is a transformative journey of self-discovery, where I explore unique production processes by developing my own tools. In this space, I step away from traditional norms and conventions of working with clay. Ceramics often come with strict rules, such as “removing all air bubbles from the clay.” However, I embrace a more experimental approach, treating clay naively—by blowing air into it, tearing it apart, feeding it through modified machines, and revealing its raw qualities.

This intuitive process challenges the landscape of mass production. By designing analog machines and minimizing reliance on external resources, intriguing objects emerge from the simplest materials and methods.

The project is presented from two perspectives. First, it showcases my experimental process, which leads to both sculptural and functional objects. Second, it displays selected final pieces that represent my fascination with the material. A shelving system acts as a bridge between the two, simulating the feel of my atelier and offering insight into my creative process.

This ceramics atelier becomes a testament to the power of autonomy in creation, questioning established norm

Transformed Remnants

This object, which appears to be crafted from marble, gradually reveals letters and full sentences along its smooth surfaces and flowing, organic edges. Through experimentation with discarded thrift store books, Willem Zwiers explores the transformative potential of waste materials. He meticulously sliced the books into sections, bending pages and hardening them using a blend of water and wood glue. The resulting fluid lines and the interplay of new and aged paper create textures reminiscent of marble.

Willem’s design process is guided by the material’s unique qualities. By preserving its original essence and reimagining its form, he breathes new life into these discarded books, allowing them to tell a story of transformation. The sculptures become not just objects but testaments to the material’s journey, showcasing the beauty that emerges from what was once forgotten.

About Willem Zwiers

Willem Zwiers, a Cum Laude graduate from Design Academy Eindhoven (2023), works intuitively and experimentally. His hands-on approach allows him to uncover the essence of materials, forms, and colors. By developing his own methods and tools, he pushes the boundaries of what is possible.
