What are the do’s and don’ts you have to be aware of while making a socially relevant design project? Renate Boere’s ‘Beyond Design’ (book and game) informs and motivates everyone who is interested in changing the world through social (design) projects and offers tools to actually do so.
The time has come in which (graphic) designers are playing an important role in rendering ever more complicated information transparent and understandable for a wider audience. However, after rarely seeing successful designs that offer working solutions to social problems, graphic designer Renate Boere decided to take matters into her own hands. She dove headfirst into the world of project management lingo, confidentiality statements, copyright, complicated contracts, the search for stakeholders, and grant applications. This journey resulted in the designer’s novel 'Beyond Design, Making Socially Relevant Projects Succesful'.

While writing 'Beyond Design', Boere filtered out ten steps that can be taken in order to set up one’s own project. These steps allow designers/design enthusiasts/dreamers/idealists to get encouraged and inspired to pursue their own design-based (social) solutions. In order to make this method easily accessible, Studio Renate Boere transformed these ten steps into a game: 'Beyond Design, The Game of Social Solutions'. 'Beyond Design', the book and the game are published internationally by Bispublishers in October 2020 and will be introduced during DDW 2020.
